Endeavors for Environmental Management
The Kobelco Construction Machinery Group takes preservation of the global environment to be an issue of the highest importance and actively incorporates environmental management approaches into its operations. We conduct business and product development activities in keeping with environmental preservation standpoints, thereby rendering our setups better while striving for continual improvements.
|
Environmental Management Philosophy
The Kobelco Construction Machinery Group is conscious that "engaging actively in global environment improvement is a task of the utmost importance for the sake of all life forms and that it is our mission to hand on a healthier global environment to the next generation". Therefore, in order to protect our irreplaceable Earth we have framed an "Environmental Management Basic Policy", on the basis of which we strive to promote "environmental management" that cares for the environment in all manner of aspects of our business activities.
Environmental Management Basic Policy – "Raising corporate value through the practice of Group environmental management"
Toward its goal of being an environmentally-advanced enterprise of global standing, the Kobelco Construction Machinery Group will practice:
①environmentally-conscious development and production activities,
②contributions to the environment in products and servicing, and
③symbiosis and harmony with the community,
thereby fulfilling its social responsibility as well as raising its corporate value.
|
Action Guidelines
| ① |
Environmentally-conscious development and production activities
Global warming countermeasures (energy-conserving products), construction of recycling-type society (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle), reduction of harmful substances (to be actively tackled), and lessening of environmental burdens (low noise, low vibration, etc.)
|
| ② |
Contributions to the environment in products and servicing
Engage actively in improvement of the global environment by continuing and maintaining environmental quality in products and servicing and by expanding customer support activities. |
| ③ |
Symbiosis and harmony with the community
| ● |
Abiding by environment-related laws, statutes, ordinances and conventions, advance harmonization with the community. |
| ● |
Advance symbiosis and harmonization with the community by actively disclosing environment-related information. |
|
| ④ |
Expand endeavors through participation of all staff
| ● |
Each single employee of the Kobelco Construction Machinery Group should not only engage in the corporate activities but also engage actively in environmental improvement as a member of society. |
| ● |
Implement environmental learning and education on an ongoing basis. |
|
| ⑤ |
Rigorous risk management
With the aim of maintaining and strengthening the environmental management setups and reducing risks, make clear at all times the locations of responsibilities and conduct coordinated and systematic endeavors. |
Environmental Management Setup
The Kobelco Construction Machinery Group selects persons in charge of environmental matter not only from Tokyo headquarters but also from the divisions, departments, factories and so forth. Further, we have set up an Environmental Administration Office to control environmental management, by means of which we have strengthened our environmental management setup and are implementing environmental management across the company.
|
 |
Environmental Risk Management and Environmental Auditing
The Kobelco Construction Machinery Group is constructing environmental risk management systems at all its production plants and bases including the Hiroshima and Ogaki Factories (such systems are to be constructed successively, starting with the domestic bases), and is working to strengthen environmental auditing. Various auditing check items have been established, including air quality, water quality, vibration, noise, wastes, chemicals, energy, hazardous substances, and facilities/equipment. Environmental audits are being conducted periodically to determine whether the such items meet standards laid down by relevant laws, statutes and so forth at each factory.

Environmental Management Rules
Aware that environmental preservation is a social duty for enterprises, the Kobelco Construction Machinery Group carries on business activities that give full consideration to the environment, abiding by environment-related laws and regulations – naturally – and in conformity with the requirements of the ISO 14000 series of environmental management system standards. We have laid down Environmental Management Rules that make basic provisions and elucidate the roles to be played by the departments at headquarters and each of the factories. With these Rules as basis, the Group as a whole is moving forward with environmental activities.
Activities of the Environmental Administration Office
In accordance with its role laid down in the Environmental Management Rules, the Environmental Administration Office annually formulates and plans for the whole Group the environmental activities listed below.
| ● |
Responses to audit results, and improvements for shortcomings pointed out, at each base |
| ● |
Internal audits concerning the environment |
| ● |
Preparation of annual environmental reports |
| ● |
Promotion of environmental reports and training plans |
| ● |
Support for acquisition of ISO 14001 certification by affiliates |
Control and Reduction of Chemicals
| ● |
Measures for asbestos
We are proceeding with a switch to appropriate substitutes for asbestos as per the Labor Safety and Sanitation Law and the Ministry of the Environment's guidelines for waste disposal.
We have completed measures against dispersive asbestos for all our buildings. Furthermore we are systematically implementing measures to deal with sprayed and bonded materials that pose risk of asbestos dispersal. |
| ● |
VOC reduction
As a measure against VOC, we are proceeding with a change to paints with low amounts of organic solvent. In August 2007 we adopted undercoat paint with 33% less VOC than before. |
Reduction and Prevention of Noise and Vibration
We investigated the effects of construction noise and vibration on surroundings, and based on the resulting data we are implementing multifaceted countermeasures for existing noise sources including blowers, compressors and crushers.
Promotion of Environmental Education and Qualification Acquisition
The Kobelco Construction Machinery Group acquired ISO 14001 certification in environmental management systems for its Hiroshima and Ogaki Factories. That led us to implement environmental education targeted at all our employees, with the aim of raising their awareness and deepening their understanding of environmental management and compliance. We also encourage employees to acquire environment-related qualifications and provide education for such acquisition.
